Rose Pruning Demonstrations

At two of the Los Angeles State and County botanic gardens you are encouraged to bring your own shears for some hands-on experience. Admission to the county gardens is $3 for adults, $1.50 for seniors and juniors. At Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada-Flintridge, the demonstrations run from 1 to 4 p.m. today. At South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula, the demonstrations run from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There’s a lecture and slide show at 2 p.m.

There is a drawing for rose-oriented door prizes at the pruning demonstration at Pageant of Roses Garden, inside Gate 1 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3900 S. Workman Mill Road, Whittier, today from 1 to 3 p.m. The rain day is next Saturday, Jan. 16.

The Pacific Rose Society has its pruning and planting demonstrations at the Tournament of Roses Assn. garden, 391 S. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, today and Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. There are door prizes too.

Also today, at 11 a.m., there is a pruning demonstration sponsored by the North County Rose Society at the Vista Women’s Club, 1375 Oak Drive, Vista.

And Sunday at 2 p.m., there is a demonstration at La Mesa Square Shopping Center in La Mesa, sponsored by the East County Rose Society.

The city of Glendale always has an excellent rose-pruning demonstration, and this year it is a part of their Rose and Garden Show, at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale. The show is Jan. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features all sorts of displays and demonstrations on everything from lawn care, drip irrigation and fruit trees to roses. There is also a vendor area where gardening products are for sale. The actual pruning demonstrations are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
