Genz Scores Two Goals as USIU Wins, 3-2, for Sweep

United States International completed a two-game sweep with a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Merrimack College in a nonconference ice hockey game at the San Diego Ice Arena Saturday night.

Tom Genz scored two power-play goals, including the game winner with 3:03 remaining, for USIU (11-11).

Merrimack entered the series with a 21-game winning streak and a 16-0 record this season. USIU is battling to win the independent berth to the NCAA championships, and Merrimack is the top-ranked independent.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

United States International could not hold an 11-point halftime lead as Coppin State rallied for a 98-90 victory over the Gulls in a nonconference game at Golden Hall.

USIU led 51-40 at the half, but Coppin State (5-7) scored 11 consecutive points to open the second half to tie the game.

USIU (7-11) was led by 23 points apiece from Russ Heicke and Steve Smith.

Shawn Stroud hit both ends of a one-and-one with three seconds remaining in regulation and Point Loma Nazarene (5-8) went on to defeat Lee College of Tennessee, 90-87, in overtime in the consolation game of the 25th Point Loma Nazarene Tournament Saturday night.

Johnny Griffin, the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 28 points to lead fourth-ranked Biola (15-0) to a 67-62 victory over No. 13 Southern Nazarene (15-3).

Rob Rittgers scored 25 points and Kevin Stewart aded 23 to lead UC San Diego to a 109-104 victory over Cal Lutheran in the championship game of the La Jolla Classic.

Steve DeLaveaga led Cal Lutheran with a tournament record 42 points. In the consolation game Simpson College defeated Western Connecticut, 91-81.

Gib Heinz scored 27 points and John Edgar added 12 to lead Athletes in Action to an 80-62 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Jessica Haynes scored 21 points, had 13 rebounds, 10 steals and two blocks to lead San Diego State to 91-45 victory over UC Irvine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at SDSU.

Chana Perry scored 25 points and had 5 blocks for the Aztecs (10-2, 3-0).

Laura Mars scored 21 points and Shannon Anderson added 20 to lead Point Loma Nazarene (9-4) to a 63-53 victory over Whittier in the championship of the Whittier Shootout.

All 11 players scored as the University of San Diego defeated the Knox Raiders from Australia, 69-52. Candida Echeverria and Meg Estey led USD with nine points apiece.

SURFING

John Siberell and Dustin Smith won their heats to lead San Dieguito into the semifinals of the California Interscholastic Surfing Federation state championships at the Oceanside jetty Saturday.

Second-seeded San Dieguito meets third-seeded Edison and top-seeded and defending champion San Clemente faces fourth-seeded Dana Hills in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals, San Dieguito defeated Laguna Beach, 64-43; Edison edged Carlsbad, 53-51; and Dana Hills defeated Oceanview, 59-36. San Clemente received a bye.

John Cook won one heat and finished a second in another to lead San Dieguito into today’s bodyboarding final against Carlsbad. The team semifinals begin at 6:30 a.m. with the final scheduled for 9:15.

TENNIS

Cal State Long Beach’s Greg Failla, who played at Ramona High School, defeated top-seeded Andrew Sznajder of Pepperdine in the quarterfinals before losing in the semis of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at Palm Desert Saturday.

Failla, seeded fifth, defeated Sznajder 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) but then lost to third-seeded Shelby Cannon of Tennessee, 7-6 (7-0), 1-6, 6-2.
