The World : Israeli Held as Soviet Spy
A Soviet-born Israeli businessman with links to Israeli politicians and army officials has been arrested as a suspected spy for the Soviet Union, his lawyer said in Jerusalem. Shabtai Kalmanovich, 46, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1971, was arrested by secret service agents Dec. 23, attorney Amnon Zichroni said, adding that judicial officials have barred him from releasing further details. Israel television said Kalmanovich is an international businessman who “employs hundreds of people throughout the world, among them former Israeli ministers and reserve officers.”
