Karin Kania of East Germany won three events and finished second in another at a women’s World Cup speedskating meet in Davos, Switzerland.

Kania, who as Karin Enke won two gold medals and two silvers at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics four years ago, won the 500-, 1,000- and 1,500-meter races. She was runner-up to teammate Andrea Ehrig in the final event, the 3,000 meters, to bring her point total to 163.446 and improve her own four-event world record by 0.465 points.

American Bonnie Blair’s best finish of the meet was a third in the 1,000 meters. She was in position to win the 500 with a time under 40 seconds, but fell approaching the finish line. That allowed Kania to pick up the gold with a time of 40.57.

Kania, 26, from Dresden, also set track-record times of 1:18.31 and 2:00.60 in winning the 1,000 and 1,500 meters, respectively, while Ehrig set a track record of 4:17.75 in the 3,000.

In Oslo, Norway, Bjoerg Eva Jensen of Norway won the women’s all-round national speedskating championship. Jensen, 29, won the 1,500 and 5,000 and placed fourth and second in the 500 and 3,000, respectively.
