Local News in Brief : Countywide : County Schools Chosen by State for Honors

Five elementary schools and 11 intermediate schools in Orange County have been chosen for honors by the state Department of Education.

Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig nominated a total of 47 elementary schools in California, including the five in Orange County, as California’s nominees for the 1987-88 National Elementary School Recognition program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Orange County elementaries competing for national honors are: Sunkist School in Anaheim, El Morro in Laguna Beach, Andersen School in Newport Beach, West Orange School in the city of Orange and Del Cerro School in Mission Viejo.

Honig selected 109 intermediate schools in the state to become “Partnership Schools,” and work with colleges and the state Department of Education to launch new educational programs and to test recommendations recently made by a state task force studying middle schools.

The 11 Orange County middle schools chosen for the “partners” program are: Ladera Vista Junior High in Fullerton, Dwyer Middle School in Huntington Beach, Venado Middle School in Irvine, Imperial and Washington middle schools in La Habra, McAuliffe Middle School in Los Alamitos, El Rancho Junior High in Anaheim, Tuffree Junior High in Placentia, Serrano Intermediate School in El Toro and MacArthur and Spurgeon intermediate schools in Santa Ana.
