Leftist guerrillas disguised as Peruvian soldiers stopped farmers and their families returning home from a fair and killed 27 of them on an isolated road in the Andes mountains near the provincial city of Ayacucho, according to police. Authorities said that the killers, members of the Maoist Shining Path guerrilla organization, accused the farmers of taking part in anti-rebel peasant patrols. The massacre was the deadliest single attack by the guerrillas in a campaign of revenge against the patrols, which has claimed a reported 86 lives in the past month.
