Denny Stolz, San Diego State football coach, said Monday he does not know when or if Iowa quarterback Dan McGwire will transfer to SDSU.

Stolz, who returned this weekend from Yokohama, where he served as a coach in the Japan Bowl, said he has not had time to discuss fully the possible transfer with his athletic department or coaching staff.

Fred Miller, SDSU athletic director, is in Nashville, Tenn., this week for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. annual convention.

McGwire, a 6-foot 8-inch sophomore from Claremont in Los Angeles County, said last week he was leaving Iowa and planned to enroll at SDSU. McGwire started two games for the Hawkeyes before he was replaced by junior Chuck Hartlieb.

San Diego State will open its 1988 football schedule against Air Force on Sunday, Sept. 11, at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Kickoff will be at 8 p.m. The game had been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, but had to be moved because of a conflict with the Padres.

The only other change from the previously published schedule is the switch of the Brigham Young game to Nov. 26 from Nov. 5. Kickoff at Jack Murphy Stadium will remain at 7 p.m.

The complete SDSU 1988 football schedule:

--Sept. 11 Air Force, 8 p.m.

Bryan Williams, junior point guard, is expected to return to basketball practice Wednesday, Coach Jim Brandenburg said.

Williams is in St. Louis to attend the funeral of his grandmother, who died over the weekend after suffering a stroke last week. Williams left the team Friday in Utah to be with his grandmother before she died.

Brandenburg said he doubted Williams, who missed Saturday’s 92-65 loss at Brigham Young, would start Thursday against New Mexico in the San Diego Sports Arena. Tony Ross and Ty Walker likely will start at the guard positions, Brandenburg said.

Juan Espinoza, the Aztecs’ sixth man, should return to practice today, Brandenburg said. Espinoza returned to San Diego Friday for an examination of his injured back. He also missed the BYU game.
