Union leaders angrily denied Tuesday that some overweight teachers were opting to get tummy-tuck operations at the expense of the Oakland school district. Educators Assn. President Denise Saddler-Lipscomb said that while the union’s contract with the district allows elective cosmetic surgery, she did not know of any teachers who had chosen to have tummy tucks. The union leader noted that the current contract expires June 30 and suggested that school officials raised the issue to influence negotiations on a new pact. The controversy began when district Supt. Joe Coto ordered the district to stop paying for tummy-tuck operations.
