Former CBS News President Richard Salant likes the changes he’s seen in TV news over the years but is not terribly fond of its increasing reliance on theme music. “When I heard the music to one of Dan Rather’s newscasts, I threw up,” he told a meeting of the Stamford Forum for World Affairs. “I think the news does quite an extraordinary job, but the music drives me crazy.” Salant, who was with the network for more than 25 years, said he doesn’t get full orchestra accompaniment when his newspaper is delivered at his home in New Canaan nor does he want it. He said he thinks most people agree with him.
