From our That’s No Bozo, That’s My Wife department: Several women were among scores of people who showed up this week at the First United Methodist Church in Hollywood applying for jobs as Bozo the Clown, the white-faced baggy-pants clown originated by Larry Harmon 37 years ago. There’s never been a female Bozo, said Jerry Digney, vice president for marketing for Larry Harmon Pictures Corp., adding there’s no reason there couldn’t be because Bozo’s sex is obscured by a costume. The firm has seen nearly 400 bozo-wannabes nationwide. It will select 10 to add to a current stable of 40 who star in regional TV shows and make personal appearances. Why has there never been a female Bozo? Said Digney: “We’ve never had a woman apply before.”
