Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Van During Race, CHP Reports

A motorcyclist racing another cyclist on westbound Chapman Avenue in Orange was killed Wednesday when he struck a van making a turn, the California Highway Patrol reported.

His identity could not be released because his family had not been notified of his death, the CHP said.

About 3:30 p.m., the victim and Tom D. Austin, 18, of Huntington Beach were racing their motorcycles on Chapman, the CHP said.

Raul M. Martinez, 54, of Orange was turning from eastbound Chapman Avenue to northbound Earlham Street when the unidentified motorcyclist struck the right rear of his van, causing it to overturn.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his vehicle and killed, the CHP said. Martinez suffered minor injuries. CHP officers arrested Austin, who was not injured, for allegedly engaging in a speed contest.
