Insects Threatening Burned Area in China

A vast region of northeast China that was swept by a monthlong forest fire last May is now threatened by insects, the New China News Agency said Wednesday.

Beetles and other pests have found good breeding conditions among the scorched pines of the Da Hinggan Ling Mountains and could do a further $250 million of damage to timber unless urgent measures are taken, it said.

Scientists are pressing forest authorities, who were severely criticized for mismanagement during the May fire, to fell burned trees and spread insecticide, it said.
