GM Engineers Urged H-Body Car Recall, Safety Group Reports

General Motors Corp. engineers in an internal memo have recommended a recall of GM’s 1986-87 H-body cars to fix problems that cause the throttles to stick open, the Center for Auto Safety said Monday.

The auto maker’s own employees and dealers have reported 50 instances of unintended acceleration in the cars, the center said. It alleged that 700,000 1986-model Oldsmobile Delta 88s and Buick LeSabres and 1987-88 Pontiac Bonnevilles are prone to unintended acceleration. The center said 300 accidents have resulted.

The consumer group released documents that GM filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. GM confirmed that a technical committee had made a preliminary recommendation for a recall but said the panel later withdrew its recommendation. The company said a recall now is “not warranted.”
