West Hollywood branch of Los Angeles Public Library, 1403 N. Gardner St., has been renamed in honor of historian-authors Will and Ariel Durant, who died in 1981. The couple wrote most of their celebrated 11-volume “Story of Civilization” while they were residents in the Hollywood hills. First volume of the series was published in 1935.

The library system’s first West Hollywood branch opened in 1932; the existing building was constructed in 1959.
