Local News in Brief : Orchestra Changes Name

Share

The South Bay Chamber Orchestra is the new name of the Baroque Consortium Chamber Orchestra, which was founded on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1973 as an amateur group and turned professional at the end of the decade. Robert W. Miller, president of the orchestra board, said the name was changed because the orchestra is the only “fully professional” orchestra in the South Bay and is working to become a regional ensemble. The new name also reflects the range of 18th- to 20th-Century music played by the 21-member group, which no longer concentrates on the baroque.

The name change was disclosed at a concert this week at the Norris Community Theatre, where TRW company and employee grants to the orchestra and theater of more than $10,000 were announced.
