Cuban planes attacked South African positions in the battle for key town in southern Angola, the Mozambican news agency AIM reported from Luanda, the Angolan capital. The agency, quoting a Cuban source, said the air strikes were made in response to South African shelling of Cuito Cuanavale, held by the Cuban-backed Angolan government and under attack by Angolan rebels under Jonas Savimbi’s guerrillas, said in December that it was withdrawing its forces from Angola, but Angola says 6,000 South African troops are taking part in the battle for Cuito Cuanavale.
