The Army will continue development of a tactical assault helicopter, but budget restraints are forcing an end to a similar effort involving a new troop transport chopper, the Pentagon announced. The decision, outlined in an order signed by Deputy Defense Secretary William H. Taft IV, represents final approval for an Army plan designed to help cope with congressional cuts to the fiscal 1989 budget. The new directive revises what the Army calls the LHX program, or Light Helicopter Experimental, essentially cutting it in half by authorizing development of one new helicopter instead of two.
