Police invoked emergency powers and imposed an indefinite military curfew on an Arab neighborhood on the slopes of the Mount of Olives today in an attempt to halt rock-throwing and tire-burning disturbances.

The curfew, invoked with military permission, was the first imposed in the Holy City since at least 1973, city spokeswoman Sevanah Meryn said. Police spokesman Rafi Levy said police and border police had tried for several hours to halt the disturbances and finally closed the area, preventing traffic from entering the neighborhood and forbidding people from leaving their homes.
