Haiti’s electoral commission said it will announce the final results of last Sunday’s controversial presidential election this morning. In Port-au-Prince, meanwhile, the country’s Roman Catholic bishops held a rally to denounce the elections. The government-appointed commission has produced the results of only 20,000 votes, which show university professor Leslie F. Manigat leading with 51%. Four former candidates had led an election boycott, charging that the voting was rigged by the military-led government of Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy and that only 5% to 10% of the 2.3 million eligible voters had participated. Haiti’s first election attempt on Nov. 29 was aborted after gunmen killed at least 34 people.
