- The City of San Diego is moving closer to commissioning its first public artworks under a 1985 ordinance that allocates yearly amounts for public artworks. Advertisements have been placed announcing the deadline for applications by artists for the first two of seven freeway-related pieces called “City Gates,” to be located at entrances to the city.

The first ones will be at “North Gate,” at Interstate 5 and Ardath Road, and at “South Gate,” at I-5 and Chicano Park and the Coronado Bridge.

Artists selected by the jurors will receive a $12,000 commission in addition to the $100,000 budgeted for the artwork. The deadline for inquiries is March 1. Entries are due by March 28. The first pieces should go up in 1989.
