‘Hurlyburly’ to Highlight LATC Season

David Rabe’s “Hurlyburly,” probably the most talked-about Hollywood play of the ‘80s, will finally arrive within a few miles of Hollywood on June 3, when the Los Angeles Theatre Center will mount the local premiere.

“Hurly Burly,” Rabe’s analysis of Hollywood vipers, opened on Broadway in 1984.

It’s one of seven plays--five Los Angeles premieres and two revivals--announced for the LATC spring and summer season at a press conference on Tuesday.

Another potential highlight of the season will be Milcha Sanchez-Scott’s “Roosters,” described as “a Southwest tale of patriarchy, cockfights and the transcendence of a young girl’s faith.” “Roosters” was earlier produced in New York and San Francisco, and KCET plans to film its own version of “Roosters” for PBS later this year.

The season will begin on April 1 with William Mastrosimone’s “Cat’s Paw,” a play about terrorists and television. Staged at San Diego’s Old Globe in 1986, “Cat’s Paw” was on last spring’s LATC schedule until other commitments by Mastrosimone precipitated its replacement with “Foolin’ Around With Infinity.” Mastrosimone “has done more work on it since then,” said LATC producing artistic director Bill Bushnell, who will direct.

Next up are a couple of sketch comics, Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney, doing “The Kathy and Mo Show: ‘Parallel Lives,’ ” opening April 8. The women were raised in San Diego and met while one was performing and the other was working in the box office at the Old Globe, where their show played for two weeks last fall. They hope to use LATC as “a launching pad to Broadway,” said Bushnell.

Czech clown Boleslav Polivka brings his “The Jester and the Queen” to LATC for an April 10 opening.

Jose Luis Valenzuela, who’s currently directing “The Promise” and last year staged “La Victima” at LATC, will direct “Roosters,” opening on June 17.
