A U.S. B-52 bomber successfully launched an unarmed cruise missile over Canada’s Arctic after poor weather conditions and technical problems forced postponement of three previous attempts. The missile was released over the Beaufort Sea and flew 1,500 miles to a weapons testing range in northeast Alberta province. The 20-foot missile travels at 500 m.p.h. at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 feet and is equipped with a data-gathering system to record its performance. The flight was the second of up to six tests the United States is allowed to conduct between Jan. 1 and March 31 this year under terms of a U.S.-Canada agreement.
