Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III said Tuesday that cocaine users in the United States share the blame for drug traffickers’ assassination of Colombia’s chief prosecutor on Monday.

“The blood of Carlos Mauro Hoyos is on your hands,” Meese said in a statement directed to Americans who use cocaine.

“Every time you hand over money to a drug supplier, you pay for the murders, the threats and the destruction perpetrated by the Medellin Cartel,” Meese said. U.S. officials say that Colombia’s Medellin Cartel controls 75% of the cocaine that enters the United States.

A group calling itself “Los Extraditables” said it killed Hoyos because he persisted in efforts to extradite drug traffickers to the United States for trial.
