Yale University and a union representing 3,500 workers averted a strike Tuesday by tentatively agreeing on a four-year contract, ending three days of marathon negotiations, officials said.

The agreement was reached after the Ivy League school made what was called a last offer to two locals of the Federation of University Employees for pay increases of 6% a year and a commitment to a job reclassification system aimed at aiding women.
