Chrysler to Close Kenosha Plant

Chrysler Corp. said today that it will close its Kenosha, Wis., assembly and stamping plants by the end of the 1988 model year, eliminating 5,500 jobs.

The nation’s third-largest auto maker obtained the aging plant as part of its acquisition last year of American Motors Corp. The announcement is the first closure of an AMC plant since the merger. Chrysler said in October that the acquisition had given it more plant capacity than it needed and that it would have to close at least one assembly plant.
