Hawaiian Gardens : Seniors Job Program Voted
The Hawaiian Gardens City Council voted Tuesday night to establish an employment program for senior citizens that is sponsored by the National Council on the Aging.
Hawaiian Gardens residents over age 55 will receive training for one year in various city positions ranging from custodial to clerical and administrative, Acting City Administrator Dudley Lang said. “We will try them in any position,” Lang said. “We need as many bodies as we can get to augment city staff.”
Participants will work an average of 20 hours a week and their wages will be paid to the nonprofit council, which is based in Washington, D.C., according to program guidelines.
After one year, the city will either offer employees a full-time job or help them find one elsewhere.
The program should be established by the end of February, Lang said.
