The state-administered Emergency Shelter Program has awarded a $197,000 grant to the Shelter for the Homeless, a 3-year-old organization that provides food and temporary housing for the poor.
The Shelter for the Homeless operates three houses that provide temporary shelter for 20 persons--men, women and children. The organization also operates a food bank that provides the public with groceries at little or no cost.
Don Heberdon, president of the local organization, said the grant money would be used to purchase a multiunit complex within 90 days.
