The World : Colombia Deploys Troops in Key Cities

Share

Colombian army units moved into the cities to help police enforce President Virgilio Barco Vargas’ emergency measures against drug traffickers, leftist guerrillas and right-wing death squads. Barco, who ordered the troop move, said 5,000 more policemen and 5,000 new judges and assistants will be hired after cocaine traffickers killed Atty. Gen. Carlos Mauro Hoyos and vowed to kill anyone who tried to extradite them to the United States on drug charges. Colombia’s justice minister, Enrique Low Mutra, appealed for more aid from the United States to fight the cocaine barons.
