Accused Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk grabbed a courtroom microphone and shouted “You are a liar, liar, liar!” in Hebrew at a Holocaust survivor who identified the retired auto worker as the sadistic death camp guard “Ivan the Terrible.” The witness at the Jerusalem trial was Eliyahu Rosenberg, one of five survivors of the Treblinka death camp who have identified the defendant. Defense lawyers called him back to the stand because of a 1945 statement in which he claimed to have seen “Ivan the Terrible” clubbed to death. Rosenberg said the 1945 statement was written from reports that he had heard from other camp inmates and told the court: “If Ivan were dead, he wouldn’t be sitting across the courtroom from me grinning. I know him as Ivan, not as Demjanjuk.”
