Problems with heat, ventilation and plumbing in New York’s new Marquis Theater in Times Square are so serious that union members will be pulled unless conditions are improved immediately, the Actors’ Equity Assn. says. The 1,500-seat theater at the Marriott Hotel officially opened in August, 1986, and is home to the British musical “Me and My Girl.” Performers and wardrobe personnel complain that there is often no heat backstage, that there is a stench and sewage often gurgles up through the drainpipes and toilets in the theater, the association said. The Nederlander Organization, which manages the theater, has agreed that the complaints are valid and the hotel is spending $500,000 to give the Marquis its own heating and water systems.
