Argentine President Raul Alfonsin was quoted as saying that followers of rebel army officer Lt. Col. Aldo Rico planned to assassinate him during a military revolt earlier this month. In an interview with the Spanish news agency EFE, Alfonsin said that “a bunch of crazies” linked to Rico sought to kill him along with Ernesto Crespo, the air force chief of staff. “They had crazy plans for Crespo’s assassination and my own, supposedly to save the nation in the name of God,” Alfonsin told the agency. Alfonsin, who has survived two military rebellions in less than a year, insisted that the Rico-led mutiny never posed a serious threat to Argentina. Rico and his followers surrendered to loyalist troops after a two-day siege.
