Former California Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird, who frequently charged that the news media was too superficial in covering her tenure, auditioned for a job as a commentator at KGO-TV, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Bird, who was voted out of office in November, 1986, has made several studio tapes, according to Saturday’s editions of the newspaper.

“She’s deciding if she’ll be comfortable before the cameras and if she wants to get back in the public eye,” KGO news director Harry Fuller said.

He added that a deal could be completed as early as next week. KGO officials declined further comment Friday night.

In February, 1987, Bird made an appearance on the television special “Supreme Court,” produced by makers of the syndicated “People’s Court.”

Bird could not be reached for comment.
