Two children were killed Thursday and two were badly wounded when an old shell they were playing with exploded, Egypt’s Al Ahram newspaper reported Friday.

The paper said the incident took place in Ismailia, halfway along the Suez Canal. Cities along the waterway, which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, have been the scenes of three Arab-Israeli wars.

The paper said one of the children found the shell in the desert at the outskirts of the city.
