UC Irvine is coming off its most embarrassing home loss since Bill Mulligan became head coach eight seasons ago, but at least the Anteaters won’t have much time to mope about it.

“Thank God, we’ve only got a day and a half off,” Mulligan said Thursday night after Cal State Long Beach dominated every aspect of the game en route to a 100-80 victory. “We need to play again.”

The Anteaters (9-8 overall and 4-4 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.) will play host to New Mexico State (12-9, 4-4) today at 1 p.m. in the Bren Center.

The Aggies don’t figure to muster the kind of defensive intensity the 49ers did, and Irvine needs to re-establish the kind of consistent offense it has shown most of the season.
