Local News in Brief : Countywide : Airport Project Forces Closure of Parking Lot

Share

Passengers driving to John Wayne Airport should allow an extra 30 minutes for parking starting today because a key parking lot is being closed, airport officials said. The long-term parking lot on Airport Way just north of the terminal is being closed permanently for construction of the new airport terminal, scheduled to open in 1990.

A second long-term is across the San Diego Freeway from the airport on Main Street, between MacArthur Boulevard and Red Hill Avenue. It will now have an annex immediately across the street to help reduce traffic snarls.

Rates at the the long-term lots are $5 per day or $1 per hour. At the short-term lot immediately in front of the passenger terminal, parking fees will increase today to $1.50 per hour or $15 per day.

Free shuttle bus service is available every 15 minutes from the Main Street lots to the terminal.

The $340-million airport expansion project involves construction of two parking structures in front of the new terminal. The first of the garages is scheduled to open in about 11 months, according to airport officials.
