Masking Our ‘Racist Attitude’

Share

Henry McGee Jr.’s commentary on Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder’s racist remarks (“Sugary Admiration Masks Racist Attitude That Blacks Are ‘Other,’ ” Op-Ed Page, Jan. 20) struck at the heart of the issue by transcending Snyder’s individual ignorance and acknowledging the widespread existence of such views. As a 40-year-old white, I am, involuntarily, routinely privy to snide and insidious racial comments from middle and upper-middle class “educated” whites. Recently, of course, were the annual ever-petty comments regarding celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The utter stupidity of Snyder’s ahistorical statements ought to cause those who should know better to reevaluate their views, particularly when passing parental “wisdom” on to their children.
