Engine Problem Turns Back Japan-Bound Jet

MINNEAPOLIS —
An engine problem caused a Northwest Airlines 747 flying from Hawaii to Japan to turn back after three hours, a spokesman said Sunday.
“The airplane’s engine was not performing satisfactorily,” spokesman Red Tyler said. He said the 747 could have continued its flight to Osaka on Saturday, but he would not describe the engine problem. The plane landed without incident, Tyler said.
