Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said Sunday that four European nations have tentatively agreed to join an international committee that would help supervise compliance with the Central American peace plan.

Ortega told a news conference in Stockholm that the committee must be approved by the five Central American governments whose presidents signed the plan Aug. 7.

The Nicaraguan president, on a four-nation Europe tour to drum up support for his campaign against more U.S. aid for the Contras fighting his Sandinista government, said he has won tentative backing from Spain, Italy, Norway and Sweden to join the monitoring committee.
