Five people died and five others were missing at sea after a storm battered the western and northwestern coasts of France, police said Sunday.

Meteorologists warned that hurricane-force winds of up to 95 m.p.h. are expected in the same areas this morning.

Two people were carried into the sea and drowned in separate incidents in the western region of Brittany, and three people were killed in road accidents in high winds.

Navy vessels were searching for survivors from two trawlers believed to have sunk Friday in high seas off western France, but there was little hope of finding the five missing crew members alive.
