Union Carbide challenged an Indian court order to pay $270 million in interim compensation to victims of the Bhopal gas leak, the world’s worst industrial disaster. A Union Carbide lawyer told the high court in the central state of Madhya Pradesh that the Indian government should give interim relief to victims while the government’s suit against the company is being heard. The government is suing Carbide for $3.3 billion on behalf of more than 500,000 people who have filed compensation claims.
