Censoring School Newspapers

Share

The recent Supreme Court decision in favor of school authority to censor school newspapers is being criticized by many as a violation of our children’s right of free speech. This is utter nonsense.

Freedom to endure must be regulated with common sense. We could rule that juveniles have every right including drinking, smoking, driving a vehicle at age 10 or any other right enjoyed by an adult.

What must be taught in our schools is the reality of life after graduation--that the work place is not total freedom but a restricted world ruled by the boss. An editor of any newspaper certainly has the right to censor a reporter’s articles and enforces this right daily.

These same students who would be allowed total freedom to write anything in a school paper are being taught the wrong message.

Of course they could take their case to the Supreme Court while looking for a new job.
