Salvage crews worked to save a disabled Panamanian-flagged freighter in the northern Persian Gulf after its 22 crew members apparently were rescued and taken to Iran, shipping sources said. There were conflicting reports on whether the ship was attacked by Iraq or Iran, who are enemies in a 7-year-old war. The 15,241-ton Mare reportedly was spotted on radar by a U.S. destroyer when the stricken ship was on fire and adrift off Saudi Arabia. Salvage tugboats were reported to have reached the ship, 60 miles north of Bahrain, and reported missile damage on the starboard side, according to Lloyd’s of London.
