A cousin of one of the Mafia’s most feared bosses has been gunned down in Palermo and investigators said the murder could unleash a wave of revenge killings.

Police said that Giovanni Fici, 33, a gang boss sentenced to 10 years in prison at a mass Mafia trial last December, was killed by shotgun and pistol fire after he parked his car Monday night.

Fici was out of prison on bail pending appeal of a sentence for Mafia association at the December trial, when nearly 340 gangsters were sentenced to jail terms totaling more than 2,700 years.

Investigators said Fici is a first cousin of Pino Greco, a Mafia killer who was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for 58 murders.

They said that Greco, a member of the Mafia’s ruling “commission” who has been on the run for six years, is likely to react violently to the killing of his cousin.
