Official Who Found Key Iran-Contra Document Testifies
Assistant Atty. Gen. William Bradford Reynolds, who discovered the key White House document revealing the Iran-Contra affair, testified today for the first time before the grand jury investigating the scandal.
Reynolds, a close aide to Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III, was part of the team of top Justice Department officials who in November, 1986, began an inquiry into the secret shipment of U.S. arms to Iran and then discovered a document outlining the diversion of the profits to the Nicaraguan Contras.
The document was found in the National Security Council files of former White House aide Oliver L. North, a key target of the criminal investigation.
While the Meese team was searching his office, North and his secretary, Fawn Hall, were busy shredding other key documents.
Meese is scheduled to make a seventh appearance before the same panel Friday.
