Reputed Colombian drug lord Carlos Lehder, currently on trial in Florida on cocaine smuggling charges, has registered his candidacy for seats on regional and city councils in central Colombia. Gustavo Zuluaga, head civil registrar in Armenia, 175 miles west of Bogota, said that Lehder was listed as a candidate for a seat on the regional Quindia assembly and one on the Armenia city council. Colombians go to the polls March 13. Lehder, 38, is described by U.S. prosecutors as one of the five leaders of the so-called Medellin cartel, a ring believed to be responsible for up to 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States yearly.
