The World : Mudslide Kills 30 in Peru

Share

Civil defense workers in Peru reported finding 30 victims after an avalanche of mud and rocks in Huanuco province. At least a dozen vehicles were buried as the mudslide, which came after several days of torrential rains, swept through a valley. “Up to now we have pulled out 30 corpses and we estimate that there are more than 70 people missing,” a police spokesman said by telephone from the site about 40 miles north of the city of Huanuco. “Because of the nature of the terrain we have no hope of finding survivors.” The slide wiped out more than 1,000 yards of roads in an area about 265 miles northwest of the capital of Lima.
