Gannett Co. said its profit grew 16% last year to $319.4 million on the strength of its local newspapers and USA Today. Full-year revenue was up 10% to $3.08 billion. John J. Curley, Gannett president, said classified advertising demand increased throughout 1987 for the company’s local newspapers, particularly the larger ones, while USA Today had “dramatic growth” in advertising revenue and turned a profit in the final quarter.
