The “Garfield the Cat” caper has been solved with the arrests of four teen-age boys suspected of breaking into more than two dozen cars and stealing the dolls for their girlfriends, police said today.

Among the teens collared by police Thursday was a 13-year-old alleged by investigators to be the ringleader. “They weren’t making a profit off the crime,” Detective Charles Vaughan said. “They were giving (the dolls) to their girlfriends.” The dolls, with suction cups on the feet for sticking against a window, are fashioned after the popular comic strip and television cartoon cat character.
