Arab villagers hurling rocks ambushed a car carrying two American tourists and a Jewish settler on a sight-seeing tour in the occupied West Bank, critically wounding one man and injuring another, the army said Friday.

Israeli troops firing real bullets wounded four Palestinians, and an Israeli bus driver shot and wounded an Arab girl during disturbances elsewhere in the West Bank, the military said.

The American tourists were on their way to Ofra, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, when they drove to the Arab village of Kfar Malek, 15 miles north of Jerusalem, and were stopped by a roadblock of rocks and burning tires.

Dozens of men and boys from the village reportedly hurled rocks and boulders as the sightseers began clearing the road, hitting Ofra settler Meshulam Moskowitz, 29, in the head.

In Critical Condition

He was in critical condition at Hadassah Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to repair the lining of his brain. His brother-in-law, Steve Wagner, 28, of New York City, also was hit by several rocks and suffered a smashed chest bone. Wagner’s wife, Tammy, was unhurt.
