In One Iowa Town, Dukakis and Dole Show Flush of Victory in ‘Cess-Poll’
The toilets of Emmetsburg have spoken. It’s Mike Dukakis for the Democrats and Bob Dole for the GOP.
Voters in this northeast Iowa town cast their ballots Thursday night by flushing their toilets for the candidate of their choice. The results were read by a meter at the city water tower.
Dukakis was the clear winner among the Democrats with 1,350 flushes recorded, followed by Jesse Jackson with 945. Richard Gephardt was a distant third with 675, followed by Gary Hart and Paul Simon in a tie for fourth with 540. Albert Gore was last with 270 flushes.
On the Republican side, Dole captured 1,080 flushes, followed by Vice President George Bush with 675. Jack Kemp was third with 540, followed by Pat Robertson with 405, Pierre DuPont with 270 and Alexander Haig with 135.
The “Cess-Poll,” sponsored by radio station KEMB, has been taken each presidential election year since 1980.
